Nehemiah 1:4-6a “When I [Nehemiah] heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said: “LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel . . . "

Nehemiah Prayer Song

I was inspired to write The Nehemiah Prayer Song during a sermon series last year based the study of Nehemiah. Nehemiah, a Jew, had become a trusted and influential cupbearer to the King of Persia.

Nehemiah's despair resulted from the news he received that the Jews who earlier returned from exile to Jerusalem faced great affliction and reproach. Enemies surrounded them, Jerusalem's walls were demolished and its gates burned.

He prayed humbly and continually to God for the deliverance of his people. His continual prayer culminated in the rebuilding of the broken down wall in Jerusalem and a simultaneous spiritual rebirth of the people.

I hope as you listen to this song, you will feel the longing of Nehemiah for Jerusalem. With the continuing conflict in the Middle East this song is timely as we continue to stand with and pray for peace for Israel and the surrounding nations.
