The Poverty Mission Group of CPC is dedicated to the understanding, articulation and practice of the Biblical message to eradicate poverty and pursue economic justice in the 21st century.
When: 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month
Time: 7:30 -- 9:00 PM
Where: Room 116
Note: Our meeting schedule and location sometimes changes, please contact Del Olsen (dfolsen@astound.net) if you wish to attend one of our meetings.
The agenda for the first meeting of the month is business (progress reports, proposals for consideration, planning for ongoing projects, problems encountered, and dreams for the future). The second meeting of the month is educational (books and articles reviewed and discussed, videos shown and discussed and guest speakers). Projects adopted by the group are carried out by taskforces whose members are group members and other interested individuals.
By studying the Bible and other resources we hope to develop a broad and deep understanding of the causes of poverty (spiritual, economic, political, historical, geographic and moral). Restoring the Biblical mandate to care for the poor, the powerless and marginalized to its central place in the teaching, practice and mission action of the church is our prime objective. This will be accomplished through sponsoring classes, lectures, articles, informational tables, library resources and the CPC website.
By working diligently to inform and educate ourselves, we want to become a resource to the whole church. Evaluating past successes and failures at poverty eradication and studying contemporary efforts will enable the church to make wiser and more informed decisions in resource allocation, mission commitments and networking opportunities.
The group will sponsor teams taking direct action opposing policies and practices that injure the poor at home and abroad and supporting successful efforts to help poor locally, nationally and globally. We plan to develop a reliable and responsible menu of opportunities for individuals and groups to invest time and treasure in fulfilling this crucial part of Christ’s mission on the earth.
