Luke for Everyone

Questions for Sermon on
February 20-21

Thank you for joining us in our study of Luke. Our prayer is that each of you will follow the weekly readings and join together with others to discuss the questions sent to you each week in this email.  Look for our emails each Monday in preparation for the upcoming sermon the following weekend. For a PDF (printable) version of the Questions click here.

Our hope is that you will see God working in your life and in others around you and you will be able to take your next step in following Jesus.

The sermon this weekend, February 20-21, will be on Luke 21: 5-28. The questions below are to be used for your small group meeting that relates to this sermon.

1. How is God changing your life?

2. Some people are fascinated by books and movies about the end times. Some don’t think about it at all. Which category do you fall into?

OBSERVE
3. According to 21:5-7, what is the setting and circumstances that lead to Jesus’ discourse on future events?

4.In order to make sense of the signs that Jesus gives and the order in which they occur, go through the following passages and for each passage answer three questions:

  • What are the signs?
  • What are his followers to do in response to the signs?
  • When (as best as you can tell) do these signs occur?

Luke 21:8-11
Luke 21:12-19
Luke 21:20-24
Luke 21:25-28

5. According to 5:28, when Jesus returns believers should not cower in fear, but stand up and lift up their heads because their redemption is drawing near. What does it mean to be redeemed? How is the word used in everyday life? What does the Bible teach us about its meaning? (Consider Colossians 1:13-14, Ephesians 1:7-8, Titus 2:11-14)

REFLECT
6. Why do you think Jesus did not judge the world immediately after his resurrection? Why is there time (almost 2000 years now) between Jesus’ resurrection and his return?

7. The return of Jesus is the dominant hope of the New Testament. How often do you think about his return? How would your experience of struggles in this life change if Jesus’ return were foremost in your mind?

8. In what things do you place your hope for the future (i.e. retirement account, medical advancements, etc.)? In what ways will these objects of hope be of help? In what ways are they likely to fail?

ACT
9. What is your next step in following Jesus? What could help you to fix your hope on Jesus everyday this week?

10. Who could you help to take their next step in following Jesus? Identify one person that you will pray for this Lent, asking that they will come to know Jesus as Redeemer?
